Rome Study Trip

Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:00 to Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 00:00

For these classes the trip to Rome provides a critical opportunity to see a number of significant works in person, many of which remain in situ. This is true for Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine chapel, as well as his work on the architecture of St. Peter’s itself, while the interior is a critical showcase of the Baroque in the form of Bernini’s Exedra and Baldachin. Indeed, the Baroque period witnessed a significant reimagining of urban space—in the form of piazzas, fountains, and boulevards—that can only truly be experienced in person. This is also true of the many Baroque churches that remain intact, with elaborate interiors that combine painting, architecture, and sculpture in ways that deliberately interact with the space of the viewer, and thus can be best appreciated in person.
