This trip will allow students to discover Istanbul, the city that serves as capital for the
Roman Byzantine and the Ottoman empires. It will allow them as well to understand its
different roles in shaping politics and culture in modern days Turkey.
Identities, languages and European vs Asian facets/characteristics will be explored
through visits to sites and meetings with Turkish intellectuals.

ISTANBUL ISTHMUS BETWEEN EAST AND WEST

CM5001 Global Communications

Istanbul literally spans between Asia and Europe between orient and occident between Christianity and Islam for

so many centuries it was capital of the world. It is now the site of major global flows center of film series and music and city that allows visa free entry to people from many parts of the world. The focus of the communications course will be on the confluence of cultures in Istanbul and understanding globalization and global flows in this context. The course will reflect on globalization in history and the present as well as the relationship between tradition and modernity reflected in Turkish history.
